AYM (Aspiring Young Musicians)

Fun classes for young people aged 11 to 16 to explore their passion for music!

Music Production - £40 

Ages: 11-16
Term dates: 23rd September 2021 to 2nd December 2021, except half term break on 28th October 2021
Times: Thursdays 4.30pm to 6pm
Location: Online via Zoom

Whether you are a beginner or have experience producing music on a computer, this course will bring your music to life.

You will learn the fundamentals of producing music, such as drums, melody and arrangement and how to create a great sound. We have rearranged the course, so you can now produce from home. You’ll be guided through the set up of the software and shown useful resources to download samples and instruments to create your own library. The course will cover the basics of MIDI instruments and programming as well as sampling and recording.

You will need: A computer with Ableton Live software (you can currently download a free 90-day trial) on your computer and Zoom for video conference calls. It is recommended you have a MIDI keyboard so you can play live, but it is not essential for enrolment.

Minimum experience: Beginners welcome.


Keyboard Skills for Songwriting - £40

Ages: 11-16
Term dates: 23rd September 2021 to 2nd December 2021, except half term break on 28th October 2021
Times: Thursdays 4.30pm to 6pm
Location: Online via Zoom

A practical and empowering introduction to keyboard skills for songwriting and production.

You’ll develop your knowledge of music theory and applied techniques on keyboard/piano. Together we will work on hand position, note values and basic music reading skills. During the course you'll have fun learning to play major and minor chords/triads, chord progressions and melodies of any song we choose to perform.

This course is taught by Mike Strocchi, a multi-instrumentalist performer and workshop leader with highly-developed skills on drum kit, bass guitar and keyboards. He is generous with his knowledge and encouragement, and keen to ensure his students enjoy their learning.

You will need: A keyboard or piano and a computer with the Zoom video conferencing app.

Minimum experience: Beginners welcome. Students do not require experience or in-depth knowledge, just a passion for music and willingness to learn, progress and improve their skills.


MC / Spoken Word - £40

Ages: 11-16
Term dates: 23rd September 2021 to 2nd December 2021, except half term break on 28th October 2021
Times: Thursdays 4.30pm to 6pm

Discover your innate language skills, learning how to turn your thoughts and feelings into compelling performances.

Learn how to write using your authentic voice, creating powerful hooks and choruses. You will soon become adept at creating spoken word pieces, using concepts, wordplay and imagery. You'll be guided and encouraged every step of the way to use your voice with power and confidence.

This course is taught by MC Angel, who ranks as a spoken word artist, hip hop MC and author, appearing on BBC 1Xtra Live Lounge and Channel 4's 'Women in Hip Hop' project.

You will need: A device with the Zoom video conferencing app.

Minimum experience: Beginners welcome.

Keyboard Skills for Songwriting - £80 / £40

Ages: 16+
Term dates: 23rd September 2021 to 2nd December 2021, except half term break on 28th October 2021
Times: Thursdays 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Learn keyboard skills from a songwriting and arranging perspective, with a set of practical skills that will greatly enhance your knowledge of musical structure.

Improve your knowledge of music theory and applied technique on the instrument, or start from scratch and rapidly learn the basics. During the course you will learn various skills and techniques. Hand positions on the keyboard, reading notes and rhythms as well as chord construction, chord progressions and melodies.

This course is taught by Mike Strocchi, a multi-instrumentalist performer and workshop leader with highly-developed skills on drum kit, bass guitar and keyboards. His patient and methodical approach will inspire you to achieve rapid progress.

Music Production - £80 / £40

Ages: 16+
Term dates: 21st September 2021 to 30th November 2021, except half term break on 26th October 2021

If you have Logic Pro experience producing music on a computer and want to learn the next steps, this course will bring your music to life.

You will learn the fundamentals of producing music, such as drums, melody and arrangement and how to create a great sound. We have rearranged the course, so you can now produce from home. You’ll be guided through the set up of the software and shown useful resources to download samples and instruments to create your own library. The course will cover the basics of MIDI instruments and programming as well as sampling and recording.

You will need: Apple Mac computer with Logic Pro X (free 90-day trial currently available) and Zoom for video conference calls. It is recommended you have a MIDI controller keyboard so you will be able to play live, but it is not essential to enrol on the course.

Minimum experience: Intermediate - some experience. Not for beginners.


YouTube One-Day - £40 one day course

If you have a YouTube channel, or would like one and want to maximise your online presence, this is the course for you!

In this one day course, you’ll discover the skills you need to grow your fanbase by managing your own YouTube channel. YouTube is an essential tool for independent creatives across disciplines. If you’re a musician, gamer, podcaster or entrepreneur and are serious about increasing your audience, this course is an absolute must!

CEO & Co-Founder of Laika Network Rebecca Lammers will show you how to optimise and monetise your YouTube channel, grow subscribers, strategise your content schedule and promote yourself to a global audience.

Course participants MUST have their own creative content/videos or permission to use any materials on their YouTube channel during the one-day course.

You will need: Before starting the course, please set up a YouTube channel if you do not already have one (find out how here) and upload at least one video to your channel. Gather a list of your social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.) in advance to make optimising your channel easier on the day. Prepare images/video content (your own or with permission to use) and have credit information for your images, e.g. directed or photos by Jay Smith.
